Hi HN! My friend and I (both avid home cooks) made this site inspired by the late, great Punchfork. Here’s a little bit of background on our project.
We use social data from FB/Pinterest to identify popular recipes (ranked by social reach in the past 24 hours) and show new recipes moments after they're published. Popularity determines the order in which the recipes appear and when doing a text search, they are also weighted by relevance. The different filters help to quickly parse through all of the recipes.
We use nutrient density (rather than calorie count) to determine whether a recipe is healthy, and time plus the ingredient count to determine whether it's considered simple. Meal types are inferred using machine learning, but we painstakingly put this info in manually to teach it.
