Sure. And taxes complicate the situation further (lots of countries have tax incentives for home owners). But as a homeowner you're on the hook for maintenance and repairs. You're also a lot less flexible: when you rent, it is easier to move for a job or if your family expands/contracts. Both have advantages and drawbacks. I just don't think it is the no-brainer you make it out to be.
