web server over bittorrent?
- madair 16y agoI've had this thought rolling around in my mind for awhile, not sure if anyone's tried it out, of a twitter-like message platform on the torrent protocol. Not that it would necessarily have to have such restrictive content-lengths, although fitting into a packet size might be a good plan... Wouldn't it be cool if a message was only alive as long as it was seeded? And PK-encrypted ad-hoc distribution groups would be a cinch. Gah, I gotta buck up and get myself acquainted with the protocol and figure out if this is just the inner dumbass talking :-)
- guelo 16y agoDon't really get it, couldn't you just share a text file?
- madair 16y agoYeah, I was thinking more about the supporting infrastructure for subscriptions and perhaps tweaks if necessary so that a seed-file subscription via another protocol only has to occur initially... That said, I think it's one of those context-free ideas which upon in-depth analysis fall apart...but I'm still interested to explore the idea a bit to see if there are any legs.
- adulau 16y agoYes but the weakest point is usually the trackers. If you shut down the trackers, no one is able to initiate a download. Except when you use a trackerless BitTorrent but even in DHT mode (for the trackerless torrent), you still need to connect to an initial server for fetching a swarm and have the initial view of the DHT network. In my view, we would need to improve the bootstrap process to avoid (or at least limit) the single entry point. But this is the classical chicken-egg dilemma...
