I speculate that they could have been extinguished years ago by intel, if it weren't for their fears of anti-competition and monopoly. Either way, I predict both will slowly be eaten by GPU-driven processing and ARM desktops. It's going to be a very tough secular cycle for CISC chip makers in the coming decade.
