Isn't a nice common interface that those frameworks and higher-level language libraries and interpreters can be written for a nice thing? It's like a nice road network, you sure want to be in your car not on the road, but it's better if most of it is good for the common tire, you don't want to change your tires at every turn.
- johannes1234321 10y agoYes, but the need for those shows that POSIX failed.
- gkya 10y agoJust like CPU opcodes have failed... POSIX is a low level interface, that of the OS and the C library. It's another level of abstraction, necessary for the ones that are building other levels on top of it.
- johannes1234321 10y agoCPU opcodes have a different purpose. POSIX aims to be an API for general purpose application development.
- AsyncAwait 10y ago...for UNIX systems, where we're talking about mostly CLI apps, since POSIX was released a decade before the iPhone. I'd say if you can run bash and gcc on Linux, OSX and BSD, it mostly succeeded.
- AsyncAwait 10y agoPOSIX mostly wasn't even designed to handle the things most of these frameworks do, so how it could be said that it failed?
- nickpsecurity 10y agoIt's a nice thing if you're trying to run on many UNIX's. Most projects just target one these days: Linux. If it's mobile supported, then add Android which is also a Linux. That means they'd only have to code the portability framework for 1-2 POSIX-like OS's. POSIX offers about no advantage there. They'll just wrap it like they did Windows and Mac.
