What funcunlity / area of Linux kernel is cpu specific?

hey, when porting linux to another architectures, which areas need to be rewritten? is it possible to compile a linux kernel that is not architecture specific? so the kernel is not aware of the cpu architecture? (in theory of course) i know that VMM is one, any others? thanks!
