I was a math TA for a while and I can tell you that people are just as bad when it comes to mathematical writing and reasoning. We don't expect everyone to have perfect pitch so why is it more reasonable to expect everyone to be a good writer? Sure, everything you mentioned seems obvious to you but you've had plenty of practice and expecting the same from college students who are just barely beginning to figure things out is a bit much.

Because not everyone has to sing in everyday circumstances, but they do have to communicate. Although it would make annual performance reviews much more entertaining...
- greenlblue 16y agoThat's true but my point was that people manage to learn enough to be able to get ideas across kinda like how most people can hum simple tunes.
