For the record I do think you're quite right that it's the forces trying to impose some sort of quasi-traditionalism helped give rise to some of the label/identity stuff, and also for the record I think my own claim about labels and identity over time is a very hasty and quite an over-generalization. (It's not like I went and did any research.)
