Hebrew University Archaeologists Find 12th Dead Sea Scrolls Cave
- bjterry 10y agoThis link adds nothing compared to the original source: http://new.huji.ac.il/en/article/33424 http://new.huji.ac.il/en/article/33424
- linker3000 10y agoWell, there's the popup 'subscribe' window that made it difficult to read the article on my phone.
- dang 10y agoGood point. We changed the URL to that from http://newatlas.com/dead-sea-scrolls-cave-12/47825/ http://newatlas.com/dead-sea-scrolls-cave-12/47825/.
- olavk 10y agoNo scrolls found though.
- themodelplumber 10y agoYeah, despite reading the article I don't get the HN-front-page significance. I'd be tempted to guess this is more of a PR thing than a substantive find.
- moomin 10y agoThere's two things: 1) it's the first time anyone's found anything beyond the initial discovery 2) it's in the wrong place, which is huge.
- gpvos 10y agoThis article doesn't seem to mention that it's in the "wrong" place. (How is that defined anyway?) The HU article linked in another comment does seem to hint at that a little.
- webmaven 10y agoBasically, it's not in any of the 11 caves that the Bedouins who were selling the DSS said that the DSS came from.
- jnordwick 10y agoThey've been finding scrolls for years even as far North as Jericho. Hopefully this finally put to death the Essene theory. Norman Golb's book Who Wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls details the findings. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Who_Wrote_The_Dead_Sea_Scrolls%3F&_%28book%29= https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Who_Wrote_The_D...
- khazhou 10y agoIIRC there was just one fragment of a scroll found years ago, with the cryptic message: "koyìsˀərun χàd ləwaþ χàd va" Which loosely translates to: "Will anyone really believe this stuff?" It's unclear what it was referring to.
- singularity2001 10y ago"As some of the oldest surviving documents on Earth..." that statement marginalizes the fact that there are millions(!) of written documents from the two millennia before 0
- tonetheman 10y agoI thought the same thing. :)
- booleandilemma 10y agoI'm sure there are lots of people associated with this discovery that would be happy to sweep those older documents under the rug and forget about them.
- Girlang 10y agoWhy do the people on Y Combinator hate Jews so much? Are they just following PG's edict?
- easychewie 10y agoWhy? Does age somehow imply truth value?
- Strom 10y agoIt does if you go around saying that educated civilization, or even earth itself didn't exist back then.
- LyndsySimon 10y agoTo my knowledge, even the most extreme Young Earth Creationists believe the Earth predates these scrolls by ~6,000 years.
- olavk 10y agoWhat people are you talking about? Archaeologist? Bedouins?

- droithomme 10y ago"It's not much of a Scroll Cave, is it? "Finest in the district sir!" "Explain the logic underlying that conclusion, please." "Well, it's so clean, sir!" "It's certainly uncontaminated by scrolls." "You haven't asked me about missing fragments of Mandean gnostic texts, sir." "Would it be worth it?" "Could be." "Were any Mandean gnostic scrolls found?" "No."
- balabaster 10y agoI'm not sure what this is from or if you made it up, but I read it first in the style of Monty Python and then in the Style of Blackadder... both equally humorous... [Off to look it up]
- spatulon 10y agoIt's the Monty Python cheese shop sketch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWDdd5KKhts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWDdd5KKhts
- balabaster 10y agoOf course it is, lol - awesome, thanks for the link :D
- MentalStable 10y agoCongratulations!
- infl8ed 10y agoThe found scroll is presently being carbon dated in Bonn. If genuine it belongs at the beginning of the other scrolls and is believed to read "To my darling Candy. All characters portrayed within these scrolls are fictitious and any resemblance to persons living or dead is purely coincidental."

- mercurialshark 10y ago“prove that Dead Sea scrolls from the Second Temple period were hidden in the cave” “the findings indicate beyond any doubt that the cave contained scrolls that were stolen.” “The material, when published, will provide important new evidence for scholars of the archaeology of Qumran and the Dead Sea caves.” “The discovery towards the end of the excavation of a pair of iron pickaxe heads from the 1950s (stored within the tunnel for later use) proves the cave was looted.” Well, at least they are sure of themselves.
