Personally I feel safe using Linux and/or BSD on ThinkPads. Even RedoxOS works on some. There's very little possibility that any out-of-the-box malware besides Intel ME could be used against these operating systems. Even with Intel ME, there's steps one can take to disable remote access, even in the majority of cases where ME cannot be removed.
