I indeed wanted Sandstorm to succeed as a business in order to support Sandstorm's development -- but to me the business was always a vehicle rather than the end goal. For now, the business hasn't worked. I'm actually somewhat relieved, as I've always felt more comfortable building pure-open-source projects rather than business-driven ones. The contortions we went through to try to get revenue felt very unnatural to me.
- rmason 10y agoHave you considered using https://www.patreon.com/ https://www.patreon.com/ ? If there's enough interest among the people using it maybe you could pay for one full time developer. I know of multiple projects where this has happened like Vue.js and Hapi.js.
- kentonv 10y agoIt's unlikely that we'd collect enough money to pay a developer in the near term. Developers are expensive. But if people want to contribute financially to the project, the easiest way is to sign up for Oasis. This avoids the 5% fee that Patreon charges.
