I went thru a phase of driving train simulators to relax. Once you get over the learning curve its strangely relaxing to watch the world virtually woosh by, kinda meditative calming. Then there's railcraft mod in minecraft which has absorbed a large amount of hobby time.
The other problem is an aspect of intensity of experience. Building a really small railroad is extremely intense compared to passively watching someone else's video, however nice the video might look. A good analogy of model railroading vs VR railroading would be its like the difference between having sex vs setting relationship status with each other on Facebook. This intensity wall is likely to be a huge barrier along the course of VR adoption. Another analogy would be its like the difference between taking a long trail hike and snapping a pix to remind me of the experience of hiking, vs just finding an pix on google earth of the same vista. The point of the experience was never the pattern of photons on my eyes retina, that was a side effect of the action. Another good analogy is I've been to F1 races and watched them on TV and its an entirely different experience.
