I read this obesity ascription to carbs a lot and it beats me. I am from an African country where carbohydrate dominant meals are the staple. It is not uncommon to see a families eat 3 square carb laden meals yet obesity is extremely low!
So my question is why isnt obesity prevalent in this part of the world?
- tim333 10y agoIt's complicated - humans can thrive on a very wide variety of diets. However snacking on sugary stuff seems quite a big thing in the USA and probably not in most of Africa.
- jcfrei 10y agoThe nutritional value of staples in the developed world is probably a lot higher (percentage of digestible carbohydrates per serving).
- dpc59 10y agoThey're more complicated carbs with a lot of fiber, they're not eating cookies full of refined sugar.
- perch56 10y agoThe problem for the obesity in developed countries is sugar. I recently read this article that sums up much better than I could explain: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/apr/07/the-sugar-conspiracy-robert-lustig-john-yudkin?CMP=fb_gu https://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/apr/07/the-sugar-co...
