I actually hope we can loosen the restrictions from the FDA. One of the main reasons our drugs in the US are so expensive is because it can take $100 million and a decade of clinical trials to actually get something approved.
This broken model creates an environment where a few companies own most drugs and consumer prices skyrocket.
If it brings more competition ad reduces our prices? I'm all in.
- rileymat2 10y agoIt is impossible to know if your decade of trials and 100 million is too much or too little without also analysing the amount saved not approving rejected or harmful drugs.
- gus_massa 10y agoIt can take $100 million and a decade of clinical trials to: * Prove that it's safe, some drugs can actually kill you. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/15/french-drug-trial-one-person-in-coma-and-five-critically-ill https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/15/french-drug-tr... * Prove that it's better than the current drugs/treatment. Moreover, prove that it's actually better than nothing or a minimal health care. I remember a few articles that about how powerful are placebos, that is actual a misleading title about how week are some drugs.
- randomfool 10y agoA number of countries rely on FDA approval rather than performing their own testing and approval process. These countries typically do have significantly cheaper drug costs. You seem to be implying that drug companies regularly release their products in other markets a decade earlier than US. There definitely are some examples of this, but it is not the norm.
