That and other things too. It's definitely the new C IMO. I like how the author contrasts it with Java, "There were many things that did not copy across due to the comparative richness of the Java libraries...". Of course, I like Java about the same as I like Go (both great languages). But if you are used to the wealth of pre-made data structures in Java you'll find arrays, slices and maps in Go to be somewhat limiting at first. You'll soon get it though and start doing really cool things with Go.
- bitwize 10y agoRust is the new C. Go is the new Oberon.
- mseepgood 10y agoGo was inspired by both C and Oberon: https://talks.golang.org/2015/gophercon-goevolution.slide#17 https://talks.golang.org/2015/gophercon-goevolution.slide#17 https://talks.golang.org/2015/gophercon-goevolution.slide#29 https://talks.golang.org/2015/gophercon-goevolution.slide#29 Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ReKdcpNyQg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ReKdcpNyQg Rust is too complex to be compared to C. It's more like C++ plus ML.
- namelezz 10y ago> Rust is too complex to be compared to C I feel Java is to C++ as Go is to C as Rust is to Scala.
- pjmlp 10y agoWe just miss having some OS written in Go with Oberon and Inferno's ideas.
- bostand 10y agoLet's write one and call it plan 11 :) More seriously, the same people were involved in all three so they are already inspired by each other
- dkarl 10y ago* Rust is too complex to be compared to C. It's more like C++ plus ML. * Rust is far, far less complex than C++. ML must be a large negative term in that formula.

- ssalazar 10y agoI think of it as a multidimensional space where Rust is a linear combination of the C++ and ML vectors.
- bitwize 10y agoComplexity is the price you pay for safety. C's simplicity has a terrible cost.
- twic 10y agoNo no, Rust is the new Ada, Go is the new Pascal!
- derefr 10y agoThis is the comparison I was going to make. Not because Rust looks or works anything like Ada, but because it has seemingly taken up the same spot in the industry's perception as the "Bondage and Discipline language" alternative to the "looser" languages like C.
- SkyMarshal 10y agoIn terms of how they will most likely be used, it seems Go will primarily serve as an alternative to Python, and perhaps non-mission-critical C to the extent that exists. Rust will serve as an alternative to most C.
- jbpetersen 10y agoI've got a strong impression that Go is taking a similar spot in programming culture over time as Java has in the past of being an enterprise-friendly language with strong standards built-in.
- IndianAstronaut 10y agoGo is also a fair bit easier to get newcomers up to speed on.
