Agreed - when I purchased my Nikon D200 a while back, I got an 18-200mm telephoto and a 50mm 1.4 prime. Most of the time the telephoto sits in my camera bag. Learning to shoot with a prime made me a much better photographer. Definitely skip the telephoto unless you're planning to shoot wildlife or have a similar specific use. You won't miss it.
