If labor wasn't needed for many manufacturing jobs, then labor wouldn't be used overseas. A problem with requiring all jobs to require an advanced degree is that not everyone is capable of doing so.
Should the less intelligent live in squalor while the smart get by? I don't think so. There needs to be good job opportunities for all classes, not just the upper class.
- cbr 10y agoIf labor wasn't needed for many manufacturing jobs, then labor wouldn't be used overseas. For most manufacturing you can either use X hours of human time or $Y of machine time. In many cases, at low overseas wages the human time is cheaper, while at higher US wages the machine time is cheaper.
- mattnewton 10y agoLabour is needed at that price point. It isn't needed at the current American standard of living. I don't think that the "less intelligent" should love in squalor and I want to involve them economically too. I also think Americans Do Not want to live like factory workers in china or India. They want to live like American factory workers in the 60s. That isn't likely anymore for a variety of reasons. We need job training for the new reality
- ivl 10y agoLabor, at least in manufacturing is also very much down overseas. I agree with your sentiment, but forcing jobs to exist when it's not efficient lowers everyone's quality of life. Instead, tax the gains and uplift the people who lose to innovation.
