  It's a consequence of fair labor standards laws. For example, the minimum wage is higher than zero.

  It's to prevent companies that have a disproportionate amount of leverage in a hiring situation from exploiting that leverage unfairly. Say, by getting inexperienced, enthusiastic grads to work for free.
