Ask HN: Do you find Wikipedia useful for learning math/science?
I have been following Strang's Linear Algebra course lately and occasionally was trying to look up concepts I didn't understand on the web. However, I found Wikipedia to be of little value (quite a bit of terminology that I don't understand). Have you experienced the same while trying to learn math/science?
- wayn3 10y agoWikipedia can be really helpful when you are already at an advanced level in math - to quickly look up definitions. For learning the fundamentals, it is completely useless. Too many cross-references, which you ALL have to understand in math. https://proofwiki.org/wiki/Main_Page https://proofwiki.org/wiki/Main_Page Proofwiki keeps the proofs honest and should be readable like a textbook, as long as you look up the right things. Proofwiki will actually tell you which proofs you have to understand before the one you are currently looking at. I don't how complete it is, though. Its strictly about proofs, though. Actually calculating stuff is probably more important to you. The problem with "following a course in linear algebra" is that linear algebra is where math students learn reading and writing proofs, which takes practice - just like learning programming from a book vs. actually programming. In order to get anywhere here, you need to apply your knowledge.
- brudgers 10y agoI find it useful and in part because I have a similar experience of seeing lots of terms I don't understand. For me, all that stuff I don't know is a measurement of the gap between what I know and what I want to know and a signpost pointing in the shortest direction for closing that gap. In part that's because I've come to see mathematics as something that takes a long time to learn and requires biting the bullet and learning mathematics. Don't misunderstand me, there's a difference between understanding mathematics and applying matrix multiplication with a programming language command to solve a specific and immediate problem...the latter is more likely to benefit from StackOverFlow than Wikipedia. Good luck.
