Most schools now have 3D-printers – but kids aren’t allowed to use them
- brudgers 10y agoIn the US, most schools have regular paper printers that kids are not generally allowed to use either mostly due to slim budgets and the cost of materials. They also have copy machines that kids aren't allowed to use and for which teachers have to supply the paper...many US parents are familiar with a ream of paper being on the school supplies list at the start of the year, all of which are collected and used to make copies and print for the entire year...and if they know a public elementary school teacher, they probably know someone who scavenges and scrounges all sorts of paper and other material for use in their classroom. There's politics and business behind the donation of 3D printers to schools, but it stops at ongoing support and maintenance and free supplies...or providing enough printers that 500 students have reasonable access. The mathematics of ten hour builds is such that one or two printers isn't enough.
