Thoreau and Civil Disobedience [video]
- Proven 10y agoAfter close to a decade of loudly or silently supporting Obomba's wars, the jailing of whistleblowers, the unconstitutional surveillance and other crimes, American socialists are discovering the long lost art of civil disobedience... Their only objection to injustice is they con't like to be on the receiving end. Pathetic!
- shinski 10y agoInteresting, I had not realized how much today resembles the mid 19th century.
- SmokyBourbon 10y agoWhere the hell was everyone for the last 8 years? The last administration murdered an, innocent 16-year-old child and said he should have "had a more responsible father" even though the kid hadn't seen his terrorist father in years. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/10/how-team-obama-justifies-the-killing-of-a-16-year-old-american/264028/ https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/10/how-tea...
- yarou 10y ago"They may torture my body, break my bones, even kill me. Then they will have my dead body, but not my obedience."
- gozur88 10y agoWhich is a great attitude to take until you run into someone who's okay with having your dead body.
- drinkjuice 10y agoKilling the person you are to keep a person you're not alive for a bit and then still dying at some point seems like a really bad trade-off to me; and if all people always had thought that way, you and I would have been born chained to a wall.
- spodek 10y agoThe original essay is eminently readable and, in my opinion, inspirational: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/71 https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/71. Under 10,000 words, funny, and insightful. It tells of a man who didn't just complain but acted on his conscience. Gandhi and MLK followed in his footsteps.
- lichform 10y agoI'm glad to see that after 8 years civil disobedience is once again acceptable.
