Hugo was a monster. My sister evacuated from Charleston, where the state patrol had enabled contraflow traffic on I-26 (all lanes were outgoing). I was living south of Charlotte where the storm snapped pine trees like toothpicks, even after having traveled across land for 200 miles. Afterwards, the smell of pine sap was everywhere. And foolish me decided to go for a walk and brushed up against a downed power line -- luckily not energized, otherwise I'd have been killed.
In Charleston harbor, the Navy had a "hotel" barge that they used to house workers when they had offshore projects going on. It was found 1.5 miles inland with no way to get it back into the water. The Ben Sawyer swing bridge to Sullivan's Island was knocked off it's center bearing, and the only way onto the island for weeks was by boat... most of which had been smashed or had been floated somewhere inland where finding your boat was a challenge.
