Why isn't Saudi Arabia on the list?
- woodhull 10y agoBecause that might hurt Trump's own business interests: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/trump-muslim-ban-excludes-countries-linked-businesses-article-1.2957956 http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/trump-muslim-ban-ex...
- TillE 10y agoThis is looking at two effects and deciding one of them is the cause. Saudi Arabia is a close ally of the US. That's the really horrific truth, and that's why Trump has business there and not in countries which the US is less friendly with.
- woodhull 10y agoWe can't really know whether it's because of his biz interests or because America is friendly with the Saudi regime. This is why Trump's refusal to divest himself from his businesses is an unacceptable conflict of interest even if he insists it is fine and there are no grounds to question it.
- mattlevan 10y agoBecause the list of countries was drafted by Obama's administration. https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1187 https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1187

This, of course, excuses the action not at all. But it does explain the choice of countries. (and, of course, Obama didn't tell Trump which list to pick.)

- CydeWeys 10y agoIt's not fair to put this on Obama. He didn't draft up this list to be used as an outright ban, as Trump has.
- t_20170128 10y ago>Because the list of countries was drafted by Obama's administration. So? Obama isn't president anymore. Trump campaigned on Obama's policies, especially his foreign policy, being ineffective. If anything this shows laziness on behalf of the Trump administration – not a good sign.
- mgiannopoulos 10y agoApparently they are America's friends in the Middle East
- potatosoup 10y agoI also posted this above, but the specific list is seven countries DHS deemed to be high-risk around February 2016, denying them Visa Waiver privileges: "Have you traveled to, or been present in, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, or Yemen..."
