The free rent allowed me to provide my future landlord with a previous address and a landlord reference. When I was looking for a place, many places asked me to provide 1 to 3 months of rent as a deposit, because of a lack of a credit score. However I found a nice location that didn't have that requirement. Taxes and rent are high in California. In that sense, working in another state... in a city like Seattle, allows you to keep much more of your money. Then, I would interpret it as "up to $30,000". So keep the receipts/invoices.
