"It's a fake!" -- In the Pale Moonlight, Deep Space 9
The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is bad enough. Imagine if we could fabricate audio and video.
Did you ever see The Contender? It's about the vetting of a potential Vice President (Hanson).
From the NYT review of the film:
The right-wing Runyon, who loathes Hanson to her liberal bones, dispatches his dirty tricksters on a quest for filth, and they come up with a collection of murky snapshots, allegedly of Hanson (whose face isn't visible) having sex with two boys at a college fraternity party when she was 19. The pictures, posted on the Internet, become tabloid television fodder. The plan is to destroy Hanson with embarrassment. Runyon skillfully turns the hearings into a smear campaign of innuendo in which he repeatedly challenges Hanson to deny that she is the woman in the photos. Hanson resolutely refuses to make any comment.[0]
Turns out it's not her in the photos. Ultimately the film is about the fact that it doesn't matter if it's her in the photos or not -- it's irrelevant to her capacity as VP.
What happens if we can insert her face into the photos? What happens if we can make up entire scenes to fit our political agendas? If we can not only re-write history, but doctor the photographic evidence. [1]
It's going to get interesting.
Can you imagine a future where there is photographic and video evidence of 1.5 million people at the Trump inauguration? When leaders are infallible, the historical record and reality must be corrected to reflect their truth.
Ever pull up a web page on a friends computer to show them what you're reading, and it's different than what's on your screen? You go back to yours and reload the page, and it's different? I'm not talking about the Mandela effect here, I'm talking about revisions to the text, ala Memory Hole.
Here's an article about the time it happened to Margaret Atwood[2]. At least, I hope that says to you what it says to me.
