I can understand the sentiment but I'm not sure if further separation really helps. As a European with strong ties to the US I'm more than saddened by what is happening but also see that Europe is fighting its own daemons. I feel that those of us who believe in an open society (and there are plenty both in the US and Europe) should resist the temptation to cut ourselves off and rather continue to strengthen our ties across the pond. Our friendship built over decades is too important to be lost to what has been happening over the last few years.
