If the advent of self driving cars corresponds with reduced private ownership then cars will not need to wait and our children just need to hop into the next free car and their phone or smart school bag will contain their home address. For adults, cars will not need to hand around near venues because we will just get into the next available car. I agree that the transition will be messy. Perhaps we will need to redesign our local communities a bit to help. More off street parking for example.
