I have got to get back to doing development instead of generalized IT consulting (aka small business support & admin). I just need to keep reminding myself that crap like this is going on so I don't decide that I really am an impostor, because holy smokes are the stories in here miserable. And for the record, the first questions should probably be "For the scenario, how often would it be used, how dynamic is the data, and is there additional data that could be used for hinting/prioritization in a depth-first search?" Not that this would matter for a simple programming exercise, but those are things you'd want to know in a real-world scenario where you were needing to do this.
