We hired a support staffer, Kevin, with a good amount of C experience on his resume, but he didn't need it on our job. Months later, a junior guy started and needed a little help with some C code so we had Kevin help out. Hours later a DBA sitting near them comes over and tells us they've spent almost an hour trying to figure out how to printf() a variable's value but can't figure out where the quotes go. Unsurprisingly, the rest of his resume didn't hold up very well either.
