I know of two guys who routinely get high paying senior jobs but can't code their way out of a paperbag. One of the guys I have worked with at two different companies. He just pops up, works for 6-8 months always needing help and never meeting deliverables then he leaves for his next job. Rinse and Repeat...all the while making 6 figures
I don't see how it's sustainable but it's working for them I guess.
- twic 10y agoI've run into a few people like this, who absolutely can't code, but have some skill at hiding it by getting help, copy-and-pasting, finding other 'useful' things to do, etc. Some of them have had quite stable careers. The key trick seems to be to find a position where it's more important to your boss to have headcount than to have productivity. For example, i once did a project with an outsourcing shop, who could put ten programmers on a project at a rock-bottom rate with a day's notice. It was vital to them to have people they could assign and bill for. Whether they were actually any good was irrelevant.
