The safest option, and what I recommend to all my friends, is to simply take vacation somewhere else. Lots of countries around in europe and asia that actually welcome visitors. Especially if you'd need a visa to visit the USA; seriously, not worth the effort.
- tajen 10y agoExactly, I refuse to go to USA even for conferences I'm invited to speak at. Many countries invite you without compromising your phone or telling you that drugs you've done are a national security threat. Plus if you have ever watched porn on your phone or laptop, you can be blackmailed with jail time. USA just doesn't desire people like us.
- morganvachon 10y ago> Exactly, I refuse to go to USA even for conferences I'm invited to speak at. And unfortunately, it's only going to get worse. Our new glorious leader is extremely nationalist and isolationist, and I truly fear it won't be long before we're as bad as NK; no one in or out except those personally approved by the president. Not necessarily during his reign, but perhaps in the next 20 years or so. A year ago if anyone had told me what I just wrote, I'd have laughed in their faces, but it seems at least half the citizens of this nation feel the same as him, that America should be a walled-in island and fuck the rest of the world.
- hueving 10y ago>Plus if you have ever watched porn on your phone or laptop, you can be blackmailed with jail time You lost me here. Porn isn't illegal in the US. Are you thinking of the new UK porn laws?
- tajen 10y agoSorry I've skipped a step. I'm quite confident that the day they want to corner you, they'll claim the porn pics in your browser cache are child porn. Even a drawing counts as "depiction of child pornography" and if you don't have the ID of the actor on file, good luck claiming your innocence.
- balls187 10y agoThe US had 77.5 Million Tourists visit in 2015, that's second to only France.
- otalp 10y agoFrance gets more than 77 million visitors a year? That's astounding.
- balls187 10y ago7 million more. France is one of my most favorite countries. I appreciate the different cultures of all the places I've visited, but French culture is probably my favorite. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Tourism_rankings#Most_visited_destinations_by_international_tourist_arrivals https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Tourism_rankings#Most_vi...
- uiri 10y agoIndeed. Even more so when you consider that they have a population of approximately 66 million. Interestingly, Austria is the country with the most tourist vistors per capita[1] excluding microstates and island countries. - mirimir 10y agoIt's not just the US. In the UK, you can go to jail for refusing to decrypt stuff.
- hackits 10y agoHe was stopped by U.S. Customs and asked to decrypt the phone so they could inspect it. By refusing to decrypt his phone they could of possibly detained him on grounds of being a suspect.
- wallace_f 10y agoThat's terrifying. Big brother is really turning into an insecure Nazi these days, I wonder what he's doing that he's afraid of?
- brokenmachine 10y agoI agree. I get the distinct impression that the coming US regime would be very happy to close itself off from the rest of the world.
