Ask HN: Legal liability from delivering unmaintainable code?

A freelancer I worked with told me about an error that came from programmers making changes to hard/bad codebases they inherited from someone else. Has anyone seen cases like this resulting in refunds / lawsuits? It strikes me that externally written but internally maintained code is a risky investment for a company, but a lot of companies still hire contractors to write code.
