Mozilla launches a new identity
- josteink 10y agoDiscussion here too: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13425380 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13425380
- dang 10y agoYep. We moved most comments there, not counting the asinine race war.
- fresh_sounds 10y agoDon't really like the new logo. Keep it simple, folks. Older logo was much better because it didn't contain any special symbols. P.S.: Looking at landing page: "Internet for people, not profit." Images: close-ups of Africans, Asians, Hispanic, women. What about white males?
- TuringTest 10y agoHey, Hispanic people is white, too. (Or, more precisely, there are white Hispanic people). Also, there are white males in the Brasil slide.
- CJefferson 10y agoWhy do you specifically expect white males?
- fresh_sounds 10y agoI mean why not? Let's include more different people.
- 128keaton 10y agobut different people = oppression /s
- lsmarigo 10y agoseriously disgusted, done with this website and potentially industry, this shit pops up every thread and the other day the "anti-diversity" post was top voted. Done.
- disordinary 10y agoI agree 100%, the sooner people get over their petty tribal instincts the better. Unfortunately it's still a few generations away. We have made huge strides against racism, homophobia, sexism, etc. in the last couple of generations so I have hope.
- bluthru 10y ago>petty tribal instincts If every tribe was equally intelligent and productive then indeed being tribal would be petty.
- disordinary 10y agoAre you seriously trying to suggest that sex and race has an influence on intelligence?
- bluthru 10y agoSex? I'm not sure. Males tend to be both dumber and smarter: https://qph.ec.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-929b67e5b164c180d10d9ece5773f03f?convert_to_webp=true https://qph.ec.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-929b67e5b164c180d10d9e... Race? This has been studied extensively. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KwMUlOoZIog/VOj9HtgsqLI/AAAAAAAAC28/WiYGChHTTUE/s1600/childiqparentedattain.png http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KwMUlOoZIog/VOj9HtgsqLI/AAAAAAAAC2...
- 128keaton 10y agoJust because we're the one usually excluded from photos encouraging diversity, since for some reason we're oppressing, even though we've driven the tech ecosystem for ages. And by driving, I mean, working our asses off, hoping for help, no matter what color, gender, sex, etc.
- Certhas 10y agoThe fact that you're benefiting from the system does not imply that you are oppressing. Matter of fact, in quite a few studies women are just as prejudiced against women as men. So don't take it so personally. It's not about you but about the society we all want to build together. (The distinction between benefiting and causing is lost on some of the diversity advocates, too, unfortunately.)

- disordinary 10y agoThere's a conservative backlash going on as people see an effort to make the world more inclusive as a racist attack on their own priviledged position. For the record I didn't see any Polynesian, Micronesian, Melanesian, or Jewish people. I also didn't see any Black Men, Asian Women, Transgender, etc. I saw a White woman and a White man with a VR head set though.
- cptskippy 10y ago> There's a conservative backlash going on as people see an effort to make the world more inclusive as a racist attack on their own priviledged position. I would hardly call it a backlash or even outrage. The observation being made is that they're specifically excluding a prominent demographic in their attempts at appearing inclusive or cross cultural. The message being sent isn't "we're all equal", it's "we don't need/want you."
- disordinary 10y agoThere is definitely a backlash, we're seeing it in multiple communities and it's culmination in political movements like Brexit and the Trump presidency. Of course they want and need you. Assuming you're white, male, middle class, a resident of the United States, and work in the tech industry - you probably make up the majority of Mozillas workforce and are one of the most privileged people on the planet. As I said, there was also a white male in the pictures.
- bluthru 10y ago>Assuming you're white, male, middle class, a resident of the United States, and work in the tech industry - you probably make up the majority of Mozillas workforce Why wouldn't it in the United States? >and are one of the most privileged people on the planet This sort of language rubs me the wrong way; it sort of invalidates the hard work of my ancestors who wanted to create a better life for their descendants.

- akjainaj 10y agoThank you for writing this. Us white males have to start standing up against this agenda. It started with the senseless addition of people of other races (even if they never contributed to a certain cause) and now we see the next step: white males being removed completely, despite being a crushing majority in all tech projects. Stand up!
- TuringTest 10y agoFactually incorrect. There are white males in that video.
- dang 10y agoPlease don't start like this on HN again.
- leafpile 10y agoThere's a white male on the "Web Innovations" page http://i.imgur.com/q0aKu8e.png http://i.imgur.com/q0aKu8e.png
- eridius 10y agoThe third image in the header carousel has a white male. It's the guy wearing VR goggles.
- dang 10y agoThis comment breaks the HN guidelines by going straight for the trolliest flamewar around. We've banned this account. All: please don't feed such topics. If this is the kind of thing you want to engage in, HN is not the corner of the internet you're looking for.
