The best advice I've received(which is a combination of journal science and self-experiment) is to moderate it when pairing with carbs - so perhaps lay off the butter cookies or cheeseburgers and fries, but don't be too worried about having a frankfurter with some condiments or a fried egg by itself. The saturated fat acts as an accelerator to the carbs, making it hit your system harder. When consumed apart, they don't have the same interaction.
(of course, once you start looking at how restaurants use saturated fat, it's easy to see that this advice is violated constantly.)
