Try WMail, if you're on a Mac (not sure if there's a Windows/Linux version). It's what I use, and I've notices a good improvement over the web version (besides the fact that it's in the Dock, with unread count). There's a helper that takes up about 300MB of memory, but it's stable at 300, never goes up.
