We all kind of know that we're well beyond sheer domination of all things earthly and bestial. There's not much to revel in, and it's not valuable to teach your children to revel in such displays.
Maybe it'll put a smile on their face, and they'll talk about it for weeks afterward, but there are other things going on in the world right now, and it's probably a good idea to figure out how to entertain our kids more wisely.
- donatj 10y agoI bet you're a hoot at parties.
- Proof 10y agoI'm quite curious to see what he has to say about Monster Jams.... If I had a choice between a Circus and MJs: Circus would win every time.
- throwarray54321 10y agoHey dang, how about banning this cock for his insubstantive comments that add nothing to the conversation. Where's the boilerplate response from standards and practices? We need the operant conditioning to induce community standards, asap.
- jonathankoren 10y agoComplain with your own name.
- donatj 10y agoI'm certainly sorry for my rash, emotion fueld comment, but there's no pattern of "insubstantive comments" the throw away indicated.
- EGreg 10y agoPerhaps we should stop sending our kids to schools designed around a model of classroom learning in the 19th century, also. Overdiagnosis of ADHD is the result of forcing kids to sit down and shut up for 10 hours a day
- icebraining 10y agoPerhaps we should, but what does have to do with the topic at hand?
- EGreg 10y agoIt is a response to the grandparent comment. Sending kids to institutions that are substantially in the same mod as when they were founded in the 19th century. In the case of school, they are forced. http://www.salon.com/2013/08/26/school_is_a_prison_and_damaging_our_kids/ http://www.salon.com/2013/08/26/school_is_a_prison_and_damag... If you still don't believe me, read the comparison between school and prison by none other than Paul Graham in his essay "why nerds are unpopular". That should get me some upvotes lol. http://www.paulgraham.com/nerds.html http://www.paulgraham.com/nerds.html
- icebraining 10y agoIt doesn't matter what I believe. The topic at hand is circuses, not all 19th century institutions.
- EGreg 10y agoThe topic of that comment was 19th century institutions that kids are sent to today.
- dkersten 10y agoComplete strawman argument.

There's not much to revel in, and it's not valuable to teach your children to revel in such displays. I certainly don't know that, and I do think it's valuable to teach a child to how to wisely and kindly exercise authority over the world and the animals in it. Were circuses a vehicle for doing that? I don't really know — it's been decades since I've seen one, and I can't remember any of it now.
