But the semantics of searching on a map is not the "semantic web" that people like Tim Berners-Lee are talking about.
It people out there can't be bothered to search google maps, is there some particular reason they'd instantiate a reasoning engine on a semantic graph to find a local babysitter?
- david927 16y agoOh yes it is. In his first TED speech his exact example is naming a point on a map.
- elblanco 16y agoDemonstrate a working, genuinely useful semantic system and the world will believe you. Until then, the SW is a monumental waste of everybody's time. this is the semantic web http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic_Web http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic_Web Searching google maps is not the semantic web no matter how you try to twist the term. You can't both claim the SW already exists and doesn't exist at the same time. The fact that I can already do something that the SW claims it will be able to do, in 15 or 20 years, already demonstrates that the principle isn't necessary and is already obsolete.

Until then, the SW is a monumental waste of everybody's time Develop the atomic bomb and you can stop WWII, but until then it's a monumental waste of time. (Ok, bad example, but you see what I mean.) We've created the entire web in the last 15 years, and it's all wrong. It's all text. For the written word, articles and books, that's fine. For the rest, it's rubbish. We have to reboot the whole thing. Larry and Sergey tried to shop Page Rank but had no takers. Everyone had to be shown why it was better. I've got a working, genuinely useful semantic system. It will take months more before I can get it to that demonstrable form. But when I do, I think you will begin to see how cool the SW is when it's rendered in clear, easy, and useful way.

I've seen several different semantic systems after 30 or 40 million dollars were sunk into them, and we've all seen Wolfram Alpha. None of them are transforming the world. But I'm not insane, if I find something I think is genuinely useful or cool, I'll be happy to love it :)
- david927 16y agoCheers! Will do.
