Verizon confirms it's working on a tablet with Google
- megablast 16y agoOh, but they won't sell the Nexus One for them. Interesting.
- WesleyJohnson 16y agoWith Sprint pulling out on the Nexus One as well, are we sure that wasn't Google's decision?
- megablast 16y agoIt seems odd that this was Googles attempt to changing how phones are sold in the US, making people less relient on carriers. And now those two carriers have dropped out of selling it.
- jsz0 16y agoI figure the N1 was just Google's attempt to jump start the Android market. It just doesn't seem like they were all that serious about it from the start.
- orangecat 16y agoThe primary purpose of the N1 and its successors is to make sure there's a high-quality Android device that uses the latest OS. If not for the N1, there would have been nothing running Android 2.1 for months after its release and the phone manufacturers would have been even less motivated to provide updates. Breaking the carrier stranglehold is a secondary and longer term goal.
- larrywright 16y agoMy understanding wasn't that they refused to sell it, but that they are now selling the Incredible, which was basically the same thing.
- jackowayed 16y agoYeah, if I had to guess, Verizon told Google that they were free to try to have their $529 device compete with the nearly-identical $200 device that's slightly better (though weirdly shaped and likely to get Android updates slower) and sold in stores, but Google made the obvious prediction that they wouldn't get the scale necessary to make producing it worthwhile.
- technomancy 16y agoGiven that the "$200" device requires an expensive monthly contract, it's really only a better deal for people who are bad at math.
- dreyfiz 16y agoWhen did "confirms" become a synonym for "says for the first time"?
- kgermino 16y agoEver since the explosion of tech reporting based almost entirely on unsubstantiated rumors.
- dreyfiz 16y agoThat's the thing, though-if there had ever been such a rumor, then OK. I don't remember ever seeing or hearing a rumor about Verizon working on an Android tablet. This is just...news. Why is it being reported as if it was a rumor that came true?
- tree_of_item 16y ago"Confirms" is just a trigger word for "this is real and we're not just spreading rumors".
- jorgeortiz85 16y agoSo much for iPhone on Verizon :(
- macrael 16y agoI find it interesting that it is Verizon who is working with Google on this. As if whoever making the hardware really doesn't matter. Why wouldn't it be HTC or Dell or someone who is working with Google on this? Does any other carrier take such an active hand in making devices?
