> The maximum deductible is equal to the maximum-out-of-pocket limit each year ($7,150 for an individual and $14,300 for a family for 2017).
- bzbarsky 10y ago> There is no legal way for a deductible to be that high That's the theory. As I noted in https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13393287 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13393287 experiment suggests otherwise for the out-of-pocket limit, at least....
- maxerickson 10y agoIf you click details and click through to the provider summary: https://content.carefirst.com/sbc/APHMMN5DRXCMMN5MN012017.pdf https://content.carefirst.com/sbc/APHMMN5DRXCMMN5MN012017.pd... The explanation is "it's a typo". Medical and Prescription Drug combined: $6,550 individual/$13,100 family for In-Network Providers; $13,100 individual/$26,200 family for Out-of-Network Providers.
- ctdonath 10y ago$26,200 is a typo? or correct? Awful close to my approximation of $30k.
- maxerickson 10y agoIt's not all that close. It's also an out of network, out of pocket maximum, not a deductible. Eliminating networks is certainly something the US should do if it wants to do more than pretend that people have good access to healthcare.
- ctdonath 10y agoWhen you're undergoing short-notice heart surgery (trust me), it's very easy to rack up out-of-network costs fast.
- smileysteve 10y agoAll emergency services are considered in-network billing though?
- bzbarsky 10y agoEmergency services can't have higher copays or coinsurance for in-network vs out-of-network. But the out-of-network deductible can still apply, as far as I can tell. So can the out-of-network out-of-pocket maximum.
- bduerst 10y agoWhat was your out-of-network out of pocket maximum before ACA? You've also confused deductible with out of pocket in your original post, on top of rounding up by 15%.
- bzbarsky 10y agoAh, that explains it. Thank you.
