Look there's no defense against the company WhatsApp itself. They are managing the public key infrastructure AND the message forwarding infrastructure. The clients are not verifying the keys independent of WhatsApp. If WhatsApp have to (pushed by governments) or want to (FB advertising enrichment) they can always MITM conversations. The question is whether others can read the data in transit - and the answer is still no.
