To address your last statement from another angle: this is not the first FOSS cpu, it only happen to be hipp right now. Significant work has gone into the other alternatives which now risk to be forgotten just because they are not SV darlings.
- BuuQu9hu 10y agoThe other FOSS CPUs are irrelevant, precisely because they aren't "darlings" and thus have no momentum.
- bostand 10y agoIs momentum same thing as media exposure? Isn't that very dangerous? Wouldn't it make open source much less democratic since the guy with friends in media will always win instead of the guy with the best ideas?
- andrewflnr 10y agoguy with friends in media will always win instead of the guy with the best ideas This is a description of democracy. :P While media exposure and momentum are not perfectly synonymous, it's rare to find one without the other.

- BuuQu9hu 10y agoThat is the nature of reality in the world of tech. You can have the best product in the world but without exposure (media or otherwise), your product will become irrelevant and die. VHS vs Betamax is still relevant.
- jononor 10y agoStrawman, that claim has not been made. Which FOSS CPUs (out)competes the ones that are based on RISC-V? Or work-in-progress that you think will in the future?
- jdub 10y ago"Not paying ISA licensing fees" is the right problem for many of the stakeholders, and few would describe it as "fun". :-) RISC-V has a solid basis in academic and industry experience, and implementations are moving quickly.
