Here's the original RFC that became the RFC which got .onion recognized http://www.potaroo.net/ietf/idref/draft-grothoff-iesg-special-use-p2p-names/ http://www.potaroo.net/ietf/idref/draft-grothoff-iesg-specia... They were trying to get .gns, .zkey, .onion, .exit, .i2p and .bit recognized.
