This was also my experience when I visited a few months ago. I didn't once get approached on the streets, but I certainly noticed that the RLD was a different culture (including one guy approaching someone else as a 'friend' then trying to start a fight with him in order to probably mug him). I can imagine that pushers are through that area but I guess I look big and ugly enough that they didn't bother approaching me. Certainly outside the RLD throughout greater Nieuwmarkt was more hustle-bustle than the rest of the areas of Amsterdam that I saw, but I never felt like I was in a place I shouldn't be.
