Not a theory person, so I didn't quite follow whether or to what extent deep learning has made breakthrough on that front. But at this moment, we are far from done playing with what we already discovered. Even as a black box, deep learning already cracked many traditional tasks to near/above human performance, and enables many application that is simply not possible before. So, I guess we are going to more papers to come in the following years until no low-hanging fruits left.
