I know next to nothing about this but my buddy is big into Bitcoin. He runs a lot of ASIC machines for bitcoin, but he says there are a lot of reasons to dislike the ASIC compatible algorithms. He's experimenting with switching to GPUs, iirc he's mining Ethereum with them at the moment. I can't go into much detail as it's not my knowledge obviously, but i can say that GPUs are viable/required for some of the coins out there. Based on his word, at least.
