good thing Google has a backbone
- c3534l 10y agoThe alternative is to get banned from China, ensuring the only alternative is a company entirely beholden the government and unable to fight back against them in the battles that they can win.
- Pica_soO 10y agoAlternativlos? Yes, they must bow to local laws. But not taking some of the spoils and directing that via back channel donations into subversive software like TOR - that is a choice they have.
- nkristoffersen 10y agoWhat has Google done that shows a "backbone" in China?
- DINKDINK 10y agoGmail warns if they believe “Your Account May Have Been Targeted by State-Sponsored Actors”[1] in a prompt[2]. I saw this first hand on a friend's machine in Hong Kong. - michel-slm 10y agoHow did Facebook bow to China? AFAICT we are still blocked there. Disclaimer: I work for FB, this is my personal opinion
- yoz-y 10y agoThere were some recent rumours that FB is going to enable censoring tools to be able to return to China.
- westiseast 10y agoI think MZs attempts to learn Mandarin, his visits to China and his 'courtship' of Xi during the US state visit made a lot of people think that he was desperate to get into China and wasn't too concerned about the implications of that. The impression is that the only reason Facebook isn't operating in China under a cooperative censorship regime is because China doesn't want FB (rather than because FB refuses to censor/cooperate). Rumors for sure, just answering your question.
- droithomme 10y ago> bowing to Chinese dictatorship, so sad Not really. NYT has solidly established themselves as a fake news site. It's very reasonable to protect the public from such propaganda sites that post fake news, do you not agree?
