Although there is some truth in this, this is not the full picture. I believe that Usenet has been replaced mainly by mailing lists, not by blogs. Having long-text conversations through blogs is possible, but mailing lists and (what's left of the) Usenet are better suited - the same way as IRC and instant messangers are better suited for chats than email, although you could chat via email as well.
