A full general purpose OS with a touch screen is definitely not a gimmick.
Surface devices (and the many other brands of Windows tablets that sell, which nobody ever seems to mention) are changing the landscape of enterprise computing in a way that iPads or Macbooks never can or will since Apple will always do whatever they can to keep you in some sort of walled garden.
Honest question - have you actually used a Windows tablet in any sort of professional capacity? Because I have and I think it's glorious. The first thing I did when I got one way back in 2012 was to install all of the desktop apps that we use to manage operations in our warehouse. Everything worked great and nobody had to rewrite any of our apps for an iDevice. Within a month everybody in management had one (a cheap $300 Dell Venue 8 Pro, which has lasted me over 5 years so far). That's no gimmick.
