I admit I am mostly porting over what I know about the Chinese concept, and based on a few anecdotal conversations with people I know who've spent significant time in Japan, assuming this was a piece of cultural heritage they shared. Since this is an embarrassing mistake to make if no such concept exists, I appreciate the correction.
