I have made a consistent effort to be honest. Being honest about my feelings, thoughts and situations to everyone in my life; friends, family, and complete strangers. It's been incredibly benificial to my relationships and emotional well being, and I've been shocked at the level of compassion, motivation and honesty I've recieved in return, including deepening of relationships and emotional connection with friends/family/coworkers/acquaintances I've known for decades, and people I've just met. My fears and pessimistic worries about exposing vulnerabilities through brutal honesty have been overwhelmingly met with love, compssion, understanding, support and opportunity. This including the opportunity to offer the same to people whom I would have otherwise been blind to their similar struggles, thoughts and situations.
<--- I typed this and almost diddn't post it because (insert misanthropic adjective here)
- Lordcosmo 10y agoHave you had bad experiences and if so, how did you cope with them? This is something people nowadays should do more, including me. I am going to make this my goal for the new year. I always fear how people will react/think about me when I tell them my feelings/thoughts. This has caused my to lie about a lot of things(mostly small ones), which becomes a habit in time. It mostly comes from insecurity about yourself and low selfworth and not being able to stand up for yourself. As such, I think these traits will greatly improve if you are honest.
- drewmol 10y agoYes, certainly, but the bad ones are few and far between. Also honesty makes it easier to identify and limit the emotionally toxic relationships. Coping becomes much easier with the increased network of people to share with. "As such, I think these traits will greatly improve if you are honest." - This has been my experience!
- tracker1 10y agoVery cool, I strive for that always, which makes some situations far easier to cope with, others harder. Also, key is to be honest without being cruel or mean, wording can make some huge differences, but that takes practice. I've made honesty a point of my life for a very long time. Funny story, as I really don't drink very often. It's the only time I've ever done so, but about 13 years ago, met up with friends after work for a few drinks, and kind of turned into a party. My boss was a bit lost for words when I called in because I was hung over. I just don't lie. (I frankly suck at it).
- Nadya 10y agoMaybe I'm terrible at communicating honestly in a nice way - but I've found that people in my life hate when I'm honest. Enough that my slogan for myself is "honest to a fault". I refuse to lie to people, even over small things. I've found that the world runs better on white lies and omission of details and that opening up with your own problems just makes people avoid you - rather than help you solve them.
